Chapter 13 – Valk

The flight across our lands hadn’t done anything to calm my thoughts. The further I flew from Eldates’ volcano, the angrier I got that I wasn’t protecting my intended mate from whatever mysterious danger I was convinced she was in. When I turned around, I contemplated how to change Eldates’ mind. Cenara wouldn’t admit to having feelings for me. Without her support in my claim, it would fall on deaf ears. Nothing made sense anymore.

Aedan insisted that he couldn’t bring his mate, her other lovers, and their son over until he was confident that they would be safe from those who hunted them. He claimed that this agreement and ritual were the only things that would convince them to solidify their trust in us. Were we just inviting their war to our lands? I still wasn’t sure I understood the benefit of siding with a family that seemed to stir up trouble wherever they went.

On top of the fighting, why were there so many mages? I’d counted more than the original number on my flight through our lands today. Where were they all coming from? I needed a better grasp on this religion before my brother—or I—did something very stupid.

Cenara’s fierce determination to save her brother and where she disappeared to all the time were other factors to consider. They were withholding something big, but I couldn’t wrap my head around any of the details because I’d missed the first meetings with Eldates. Although. . .weren’t we also keeping secrets? Eldates meant to subjugate Cenara and the mages to strengthen his position.

I just still couldn’t shake the feeling that Eldates wasn’t ready for whatever they were hiding from us. War, I could handle; I just needed to understand why. I needed a purpose before risking my life, or I’d rather trek elsewhere. The biggest problem with that plan was I knew she existed now. I wouldn’t be able to walk away from her. Still, it’d be better to face this head-on and, on my terms, not the ones whispered in the shadows.

When I landed on the platform and shifted into my smaller form, I still hadn’t quite figured out what my plan would be. How did I interact with her now? Could I wait until after she bonded with Eldates and he “gifted” her to me? My inner beast roared at that thought. If I couldn’t convince her to take me instead, I wasn’t sure I could avoid a battle with my brother. Ultimately, the most logical course of action was another conversation with her.

Beside the entrance where Izotza had been earlier, shadows flickered unusually against the rocky wall before Aedan stepped out and into my direct path. How had I not seen him? Was he one with the shadow? I’d seen his fire breath, so I figured he’d be a fire dragon, but now that I thought more about it, that never seemed quite right.

“Just the dragon I was looking to speak with.” He crossed his arms with a cocky half-smirk plastered on his face that pissed my beast off.
